In the Pacific Northwest, in 1924, there was an uninhabited, tranquil, valley shared by the United States and Canada. Somewhere in the valley, a small heard of deer looked up from their grazing and began running in all directions. Suddenly, the valley became chaotic and busy. A couple of tunnels opened up on opposite sides of the grassy valley and 50 or more men poured through.

They were clearing the way for a two railroad mainline, the Coastal Starlight, that was being built through the valley. One team was working up from the south and the other team was working through the valley from the north and Canada. There meeting point was in this little valley. This new mainline would connect US’s San Diego in the south to Calgary in Canada to the north.

One day, as the teams got closer together and the mainline was nearing completion, a young, elegantly dressed woman arrived at the work site. She was the foreman’s wife, Mary, who had traveled there from LA. She was there to witness the completion of the mainline and join her husband in the final celebration. A lot of the railroad executives were also there, but Mary was the only woman.

Mary was sophisticated, lively, and very attractive. Almost immediately, she was the center of attention at the work site. Mary and her husband had never had children. They were told that she was barren and would never have a child. This allowed Mary to live a more carefree lifestyle that included getting a higher education and a lot of traveling. This time she decided to join her husband for the big celebration and party.

Mary’s easy going, approachable manner had especially attracted the attention of one of the workers from Canada, Big Ed. Big Ed was a tall, muscular man. The many years of working on the railroad showed on his face and body. He was a man of few words. He expressed his attraction to Mary by being very attentive to her and by long glances, from afar, that made her blush.

On Mary’s third day in the valley, she was cleaning up at the river’s edge where she had privacy from all the guys. As she waded naked into the crisp, cool, mountain water, she suddenly saw Big Ed watching her. She froze in place, but didn’t make any effort to cover her body.

Without saying a word, Ed waded into the water and embraced Mary. She didn’t resist as he kissed her passionately. Ed grabbed Mary and pulled her up into his strong arms. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he carried her back to the river’s edge where he gently laid her down. There in the grass, on top of her clothes, they made love. With the possibility of getting caught very high, their sex was fast and aggressive. When they were done, Ed quickly left without saying a word. (Read Cicely’s Secret)

Mary never saw Big Ed again, but their union gave her a son who Mary named Dale. Dale will become an important person in the history of this sleepy, little valley. Mary’s husband never knew the truth and they never had another child.
